DescriptionThis listing is for a 10 piece miniature castle set, made in the Erzgebirge region of Germany, on the East German side! Germany was divided between East and West from 1945 until 1989. This set dates to the 1960\'s. It is made from little blocks of wood that have been \"stamped\" with the designs. This type of little building was made in this region for at least 80 years! The really old pieces had painted details, while the newer pieces (starting in the 1920\'s) usually had stamped details. This set is really cute - the buildings and pieces can be arranged in a number of configurations! Only one piece is marked Made in GDR.The little set has no damage. The wood has darkened a bit with age. Once of the fence pieces has lightened stamping, a manufacturing flaw.The pieces measure:largest center building - 2 7/8\" tall 1\" wide
two towers - 2 3/8\" tall 1\" wide
two houses - 2 1/4\" tall 1\" wide
gate - 1 1/8\" tall 1\' wide
four fence pieces - 1/2\" tall 3\" longI have lots of vintage Erzgebirge pieces that are so fun to use as Christmas Putz villages! Putz is the German word for plaster, and most of the early pieces were made from plaster (chalk). That word has come to mean the village scenes that people display under their trees each year at Christmas.The Erzgebirge region of Germany is in the mountains, and some of it was East and some West Germany, when it was divided. The area has been home to folk art toy makers for hundreds of years. The East German pieces are a lot more scarce - because East Germany was behind the wall, until it came down in 1989, and Germany was re-unified.
