Special Care & Instructions For Use Below :

Driftwood fulfills a variety of not only beautiful but practical functions in a freshwater aquarium.
The knotty brown whorls of a piece of driftwood provide a strong contrast to the green plants and vibrant colors of your fish. Driftwood provides a hiding space for small or shy fish. It also provides a good anchor for the roots of floating plants mimicking a natural habitat which can lead to healthier, less-stressed fish.
Each piece of driftwood is unique and will sometimes appears gnarled, twisted, bleached and sanded because of its time in the rivers and streams, being rolled and tossed in the water.

Instructions for Use in a Aquarium or Fish Tank

1. When purchasing your driftwood Pick driftwood that is sized to match your aquarium. Collect the measurements of your aquarium, and measurements of the area you want to fill in the tank.
If you are trying to provide hiding places, or breeding areas, look for a piece with nooks and crannies, hollow caves or swim throughs. If you want to anchor plants, try to find a piece that has good attachment points, or branching effects.

2. When cleaning your driftwood always remove any organic material and loose splinters that we have missed or that have worked their way loose.
Do not use soaps or harsh cleansers ever as this will likely kill your fish.
If you are concerned about introducing algae, you can boil the driftwood for one to two hours to sterilize it in plain water.

3. Soaking/conditioning your driftwood, We have \"never\" had any problems with our driftwood releasing tannins that will discolor your aquarium water but we want you to have the options of doing it anyway.
This will help release any debris lodged into the crevices and release any tannins deep with-in the wood, and resaturate the wood so it will sink easier.
Some experts say the longer it soaks the better for atleast few hours, up to a couple of week.
You can also spray the wood with a garden hose if it\'s too large to soak or you want to simply rinse it.

4. Because driftwood is extremely dry and porous, it often floats on the surface of the water until it becomes waterlogged.
(It may take a couple of weeks for wood to become re-saturated enough to sink by itself and will need to be weighted down with slate, rocks or bricks).

5. You may want to consider attaching aquarium plants, such as Java Moss or Anubias nana to your driftwood for a natural look. You can use cotton thread, which will dissolve as the plant becomes established, or mono-filament thread, which you can remove later if you choose.

6. Add your driftwood. Make sure to do this when the water in your tank is not completely full. The middle of a water change is ideal.

7. Driftwood may need to be weighted down with rocks to stop them from floating. We do have flat pre-drilled slate rock in our store if you do not have your own available.
Each piece of driftwood is a natural product, each will have a different personality so we do not guarantee any of our driftwood to sink . Once the slate rock is attached with included long screws you will need to slide the slate underneath your aquarium gravel. The added gravel weight will add to it sinking.

Instructions for Use in a Reptile Tank/Cage

A popular and important use for driftwood is using it in reptile cages/tanks, semi-aquatic turtles, newts, frogs, crabs, lizards, snakes and other creatures absolutely love it as submerged and exposed Basking Sites.

Having a dry basking site is important for most semi-aquatic turtles, many species prefer to use structures that are at or just below the water’s surface, and rarely expose themselves fully.
Included among these are the various box, Mud and Musk Turtles, Common and Alligator Snapping Turtles, Softshells and many Snake-Necked Turtles.
Small/Baby hatchling turtle species that bask as adults are also often reluctant to leave the water completely, and favor submerged basking platforms.Even fully-aquatic turtles need a place to rest, and most prefer one that is near the surface, to facilitate breathing, They also use underwater structures as “ladders” to the surface.

Driftwood attached to a sturdy slate base will provide a natural habitat and take care of these needs. Driftwood looks great as well, especially when surrounded by live plants. It supports algae growth and will also be used as a foraging site by freshwater shrimps, snails and crayfishes.
Driftwood can be arranged to extend up above the water’s surface in those situations where a dry site is needed.

Long, sloping lengths of wood make ideal basking platforms, while bases with multiple pieces attached provide a variety of levels for your animals to experiment with.
If a dry basking site is needed, you can arrange for part of the wood to break the water’s surface. weathered wood is also gentle on turtle plastrons and amphibian skin, and much preferable to rock.

Snakes love twining vines, driftwood trees and driftwood that they can coil around. Lizard species like angles or flat pieces they can crawl and climb on to bask in the light and warm themselves as they do in their natural habitat.

Driftwood being a natural resource allows for a natural habitat for plants and animals.

You should always sterilize the wood before use in a terrarium or vivarium, by baking it in your oven (never leave driftwood unattended in your oven) at a very low temperature. This will kill any bacteria that would pollute your structure.

Driftwood should be attached to a flat slate base to prevent it tipping over and breaking glass or injuring your reptiles or birds.

Plants look particularly attractive when combined with driftwood and driftwood supports algae and moss growth.
