The first reference about Toromiro was made by Foster in 1774. Later, James Cook on his second voyage around the world it indicates that in the hills of Easter Island grew one? Mimosa? 2.7 to 3 m high, and some plants have trunks 20 to 30 cm in diameter.Thomson, in 1889, stands of this species observed in different parts of the island. While in 1917, the Swedish botanist Carl Skottsberg take samples of Toromiro unique individual who manage to locate. This observation also made Drapkin D. (1934) and E. Volosky (1953).
Don Ephraim Volosky scored on the labels of samples Herbarium, which came from the only copy of the existing species on the island. This was a tree 3 m tall, with a trunk diameter was around 25 cm. This unique plant seeds collected and sent to the mainland.
