Welcome to Sea Green Mermaid!
For sale is a 10k yellow gold signet ring with the image of Pocahontas. This ring was conferred on members of a women\'s society called the \"Degree of Pocahontas.\" The ring is large, solid and heavy. It features the image of Pocahontas in blue enamel on the front, with \"D of P\" on one side and crossing tomahawks on the other side. The enamel shows wear (see photos) and the gold shows scuffs and scratches due to age. Otherwise the ring has no damage.
This ring is an artifact that attests to America\'s enduring fascination with native American culture. Along with its brother organization, the Order of Red Men, the Degree of Pocahontas reflected white middle-class America\'s desire to appropriate native American ritual, costume, language, and spirituality.
(From Wikipedia) TheDegree of Pocahontaswerethefemale auxiliaryof theImproved Order of Red Men, an American fraternal order.Despite using names based oncommon non-Native ideas about Native Americans, it was formed solely by and for, white women. This organization was formally instituted in 1855.As of 1921 the Degree had 120,000 members.

In the early 1920s membership was open only to white women over 18, who were determined to be of \"good moral character\" and \"a firm belief evidenced by life and act, and not mere declaration alone in the existence in theGreat Spirit- God - in whose hands all power is, and to whom all are accountable.\"

The order had a secret ritual, signs and passwords. New members were required to attend an initiation ceremony.[17]The Degree\'s sign of recognition was a right hand raised to face level with the two fore fingers extended, the last two fingers closed, and the thumb on the third finger, signifying \"Who are you?\" The correct answer was the same gesture with the left hand meaning \"A friend\".[18]
