11th Century Koran Manuscript Leaf on Vellum.Parchment. A rare Koran manuscript leaf written on vellum in Andalusian script, famous for its handsome, elegant, and austere characters. The leaf measures approximately 15 x 18.5 cm and consists of 18 lines of text, written in brown ink on vellum, with vowels in brown too but other diacritical symbols are written in blue, green, ochre, red, and yellow. This leaf begins with the middle of Verse (ayah) 48, Chapter 41 and ends with the middle of Verse 4 of chapter 42. As you can see from the pictures, the leaf is near perfect with small lower corner missing but text is intact. It has been very well taken care of and in excellent condition. Also, it has a beautiful and ornate heading with large script for Chapter 42 On both sides of the leaf, there are a somewhat large circle, which usually indicates the tenth verse, as it is in this leaf. Minor fading, but still in an excellent condition. This is a handsome example of some of the earliest Arabic writing. (See Martin Lings’ THE QURANIC ART OF CALLIGRAPHY AND ILLUMINATION)
