This very early Revolutionary War 12 pounder cannonball is from the Battle of Great Bridge, (nowChesapeake), Virginia, fought December 9, 1775 that resulted in the first American victory!

This cannonballis in good condition & still has a mol;d casting seam with light to light/medium pitting & was painted black a long time ago.

It was bought by James Andersonin Norfilk Virginia from a collector who found several of these cannonballs & some grape shotin 1948.

It comes with a very detailed Anderson Collectionletter.

Battle of Great Bridge,

The British forces under British Governor Lord Dunmore & Captain Samuel Lesliehad over 400 well trained professional British regular soldiers including the 14th Regiment of Foot & an unknown number of British Royal Navy sailors & Royal Marines.The ToryMilitia included the Ethiopian Regiment & the Queen\'s Own Loyal Virginia Regiment.

The Wig (American rebels called patriots) had 861 untrained & ill equipped Virginia Militia under Colonel William Woodford.

The Americans stormed over the bridge capturingthe pair of cannons & forced the British forces to retreat back to Norfolk which was at the time a Tory center, Norfolk was later abandoned by Dunmore and the Tories, who fled to navy ships in the harbor &Whig-occupied Norfolk was destroyed on January 1, 1776.
