This page is an original leaf from the 1541edition, which was required in everychurch in England.

It was chained to the pulpit and a reader was providedso that even the illiterate could hear the word of God in the English language.

Reformationinstituted by King Henry VIII gained in strength, the need was felt for adistinct, dignified version of the Bible to meet the needs of both thereforming and conservative wings of the Church. The able Coverdale wasappointed by the King to carry out this important task.

Sevenessentially identical editions of the Great Bible were printed at London in1540 - 41, in conformity with Henry VIII\'s royal order instructing everyclergyman in the Kingdom to provide \"one boke of the whole Bible of thelargest Volume in Englysshe and have the same sett up in summe convenient placewithin the churche that he hath cure of, wherat his parishioners may mostcommodiously resort to the same and red yt.\"
