Attractive early Catholic liturgical Missal, published by the famous Plantin in Antwerp, 1621.The Roman Missal (Missale Romanum) published by Pope St. Pius V in 1570, during the seventeenth to twenty seventh sessions of the Council of Trent, eventually replaced the widespread use of different missal traditions by different parts of the church. Finely bound Missal bound in original striking gilt bordered leather, as shown with central designs and beautiful gilt deco to the spine (monogram of Society of Jesus central to both boards, surrounding panel with cherubs head device to all four corners). There is some external wear; the spine with some leather lacking, also some creasing, rounding, additional leather loss and such, as shown in the pics. Page edges with some edgewear due to protrusion, some leaves with mild staining but overall nicely preserved. The contents are complete, meeting collation: 32 leaves, 604, cxviii, [6]pp. Contains texts from the Breviary and Missal, together with prayers, music, rituals and much more related Liturgical material. Includes a 2 page section dealing with exorcisms and demon removal. Front hinge nearly broken (board tenuously holding by only the endpapers); rear hinge in similar standing. Text printed in red and black, with numerous illustrated vignettes,8 full page engravings with red hand colored historiated initials, music and more, as shown. Includes colophon, and on verso the notable Plantin device. Manuscript notes to rear EP, also some old 1400s manuscript vellum binder\'s wastes used for spine support. Text in Latin. Overall a rare and decent copy of this important Catholic liturgical work that would benefit from sympathetic restoration. Measures 10.25\" x 7\" x 2.25\". Good
