As regards restoration, leather starts failing after 100 years depending on usage. Any large Bible exceeding this age almost invariably will need the front and back covers reattached to the body of the Bible using new leather.

On display is a unique copy of a 1694 King James Bible. It contains the portions of the Book of Common Prayer starting with an order of morning prayer. The Old and New Testament as well as Apocrypha follow. Lastly is the Whole Book of Psalms printed in 1693. Foxing is present throughout as shown in the pictures above. The spine shows 4 raised bands. The boards, both front and back as well as spine have been professionally reattached. The color is an exquisite midnight black. The original boards as well as leather on them have been reused in order topreserve the integrity of the bible. The original leather on the front and back boards has been reconditioned. The leather on the spine and the front corners is new with the original spine overlaid on the new leather. The covers have been brought to their originalbrilliant lustre.This is a beautiful example of a Bibleprinted in 1694 and while not having checked every page it is for the most part complete. It must be noted that most books of this age will be missing something and this Bible is no exception. The Book of Common Prayer appears to be missing introductory pages. In addition the first 10 to 12 pages show tattered edges and soiling due to negligence in maintaining it. It measures 6 7/8\" x 5 1/4 \" x 2 5/8\". This is an extremely unique Bible as it has over 175 full page metal engraved plates. This accounts for the unique thickness of this particular volume. Their is no family history present. The first 5 to 7 pages have tattered edges as shown in the pictures above. In addition The Book of Common Prayer is also lacking it\'s Title age but does have the Dedication to Queen Mary dated 1692. Of the 175 engraved plates at least 26 show some damage as well as minor tears or chips. The Book of Psalms dated 1693 bound in at the rear is lacking all after pp82. This is a very interesting illustrated Octavo Bible of the late 1600\'s.It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age.This is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history in the form of an authentic early King James Bible printed in the 1600\'s and with rare a unusually large number of engraved plates. It would make an excellent display piece that could be opened to any of the magnificent Title pages or engraved plates, or left closed to show the spectacular authentic 300 + year old leather covers.
