N.D. Circa 18th/Early 19th Century;Ethiopia/Northern Africa; Illustrated; Parchment; Wood Boards; (179 Leaves) 358 Pages (Appears to be Complete); w6.6\"xh7\", 2.8\" Thick; Ge\'ez Text; Extremely Rare!!!
Not sure if there is a date in here, my estimate would be 18th Century or early 19th Century, I\'ve been told it\'s older. ONE OF A KIND!
ATTRIBUTES:
Original crackedwooden boards, sewed up down the middle, Coptic binding, pages on parchment (likely goatskin), 13 lines each double column ge\'ez textin black ink with some red ink highlights, with 16 Brilliant Colorful Paintings, (including St. George and the Serpent, Madonna, The Annunciation, and The Crucifixion, Three Wise Men/Birth)and a Great Piece of has close historical ties with all three of the world\'s major Abrahamic religions. In the 4th century, the region was one of the first in the world to officially adopt Christianity as the state religion.
Ge\'ez is an ancient South Semitic language that originated in Eritrea and the northern region of Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa. It later became the official language of the Kingdom of Aksum and Ethiopian imperial court.
Today, Ge\'ez remains only as the main language used in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Ethiopian Catholic Church, the Eritrean Catholic Church, and the Beta Israel Jewish boards, both sides broken at some point/sewn together, Coptic binding/loosely tied, heavy wear to pages/page edges, some blemishing throughout, some holes, some smudges, some old sewn repairs, few pages separated but present, some newer writing/scribbles/crosses at borders of some pages, last 50-100 pages have heavier wear, missing some text/pieces to pages/heavy blemishing, last 20 pages or so are more of fragments/heavy wear/missing some portions, last two plates are missing some at gutter/lower inner corners, others are very good. Would handle with care.
