Bio of the Author:

GAETANO MARIA from Bergamo (nee Marco Migliorini). - Marco Migliorini was born in Bergamo on 25 Febr. In 1672, the eldest son of Marco Antonio and Lucia Maffeis, wealthy merchants of fabrics. He was sent to study at the insistence of his uncle Don Stefano Migliorini, then rector of the college of the Mansion of Bergamo. At eighteen he graduated with honors in rhetoric, logic, philosophy and law, he chose the religious life in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, revealing a vocation gained through attendance of Theatines of his city. In honor of Gaetano da Thiene, May 3, 1691, on the occasion of the investiture in the convent of Trenzano, assumed the name of Gaetano Maria.

He studied philosophy at the Capuchin monastery S. Alexander of Bergamo in 1695, then theology and apologetics at Brescia in 1697, where he was ordained priest. Finally, in 1701, he received the \'\"obedience\" for preaching, which for twenty years was his main activity, carried out almost always within the territory of his diocese.

They were intense years: despite the constant movement, he continued to study, weaving epistolary contacts with personalities such as AM Querini, G. Lami, AP Berti, D. Concannon, S. Maffei, PA Serassi, G. Tiraboschi, Zechariah and FA LA Muratori.

In 1720, almost fifty years old, he decided to study the mathematical sciences whose rigor, he thought, would be beneficial for his oratory. So, in just a year, he wrote the Euclidianae geometriae, a manuscript of 410 pages divided into 13 books and 2 codes (preserved in the Library of St. Alexander of Bergamo), which is his first work, dated 1721. He fell ill with tuberculosis in 1722, the disease led him to the threshold of death. Healed him, convinced that he had received a pardon from Madonna.

In order to preserve his health superiors forced him to refrain from preaching and he decided to devote himself to teaching through his writings. In his cell in S. Alexander, during the remaining thirty years of life, fired at least forty volumes of meditations, subsidies for religious and theological works that made him so popular and well known in brief as to become a consultant for the St. Office, counselor to the bishop of Bergamo A. Redetti, the curie of Brescia, Padua, Venice, Lombardy and of the province of the Capuchins.

In July 1753, now sick and foreseeing the imminent end, he stopped writing and, not wanting to leave memories of him, he burn his important correspondence.

The doctor painter C. Brakes portrayed him in a picture, then exposed in the refectory of the convent shortly before his death, which happened in Bergamo on Sept. 10. , 1753.

The G. was an orator, writer and ascetic theologian. Weary of mysticism and preached the \"ordinary way of perfection\", to pace yourself with the help of humility, charity and piety of the heart in three phases: the meditation on one\'s sins and repentance, the imitation of Christ with the practice of the virtues, the attainment of union with Him through the exercise of true holiness.

In the theology G., against the rigor Jansenist, joined to a moderate probabilism. In the name of Franciscan poverty, moreover, was against usury and interest on money but, before this, like other sins, together with the radical nature of the negative judgment on the act, always the recommended ways of gentleness and understanding to the penitent.

Works. The books of G. had an extraordinary success, until the first half of this century there were about 397 editions. The most important titles are: The man educated in his apostolic vocation to the confessional (Bergamo in 1726, before the author\'s death had 11 licensed editions and other clandestine, in 1872 in Mainz L. Ohler took care of the German translation), L \' educated man in his apostolic vocation to the pulpit (Venice 1729, dedicated to Benedict XIII; these two works, aimed at educating religious on their two major functions of confession and preaching, were later gathered into a single Latin edition in Monaco of Bavaria , by F. Burghausen in 1750), Reflections on the probable opinion (Brescia 1739), The morality of the Gospel preached (Padua, 1743, dedicated to Benedict XIV); thoughts and feelings on the Passion of Jesus Christ for every day of the year (Bergamo in 1733, is the work of the most famous ascetic G.; saw 66 editions, one German, two Dutch, a Portuguese, three Spanish eight French and two English).

All the writings of G. were gathered in the 12 volumes of the works of Gaetano Maria pf from Bergamo, edited by A. Viscardi, who added a biography of the author (Rome 1766-80, reprinted in 36 volumes, Monza 1838-46).
