A gem from the press of the famous Saur family, known well for producing the first Bible printed in the New World in a European language.First published in 1757. \"Christoph Saur subsequently reprinted the Lutheran Marburg hymnal in 1759, 1762, 1770, and 1777, and along with the Freytlinghausen, or Halle, hymnbook (which never received an American reprint, however) it was the most widely used Lutheran hymnal during these years\" (Arndt & Eck, citing Wolf). As stated, the elder Sauer produced the first bible in a European language to be printed in America (1743). Christoph II was best known for the \"Gun-Wad Bible,\" after its use in the American Revolutionary War as cartridge paper during the Battle of Germantown. This Bible is also notable for being the first Bible printed from type cast in America. Reputed to have been printed in an edition of 3000 copies, most are said to have been destroyed by the British during the battle.

Truly a nice piece of Americana from this very same press, 6 years earlier by the very same man.

OriginalPA German leather with light wear to edges, spine with 4 raised bands as shown, with light wear, overall nicely kept. Clasps sadly lacking. Pages with some browning and mild waterstaining, a few small tears and chips else fine. Complete including the frontis. Printed in double-column format, without the music. Also includes \"Der kleine Catechismus Lutheri.\" (13pp), and \"Evangelia und Episteln auf alle Sonntage ... und der Historie von der Zerstöhrung der Stadt Jerusalem.\"--82 [i.e. 83], [1] p. at end. Measures 6.75\" x 4.25\" x 2\". Bookplate and stamp of Charles E Sebold in front, else unmarked. Quite valuable and scarce; a very nice copy of a landmark in American religious and printing history. Good luck!
