FROM TITLE PAGE:

  • \"AN ACCOUNT OF THE VOYAGES UNDERTAKEN BY THE ORDER OF HIS PRESENT MAJESTY FOR MAKING DISCOVERIES IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE, AND SUCCESSIVELY PERFORMED BY COMMODORE BYRON, CAPTAIN WALLIS, CAPTAIN CARTERET, AND CAPTAIN COOK, IN THE DOLPHIN, THE SWALLOW, AND THE ENDEAVOR: DRAWN UP FROM JOURNALS WHICH WERE KEPT BY THE SEVERA COMMANDERS, AND FROM THE PAPERS OF JOSEPH first voyage of James Cook was a combined Royal Navy and Royal Society expedition to the south Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. It was the first of three Pacific voyages of which Cook was the commander. The aims of this first expedition were to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun (3–4 June of that year), and to seek evidence of the postulated Terra Australis Incognita or \"unknown southern land\".
  • The expedition continued northward along the Australian coastline, narrowly avoiding shipwreck on the Great Barrier Reef. In October 1770 the badly damaged Endeavour came into the port of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies, her crew sworn to secrecy about the lands they had discovered. They resumed their journey on 26 December, rounded the Cape of Good Hope on 13 March 1771, and reached the English port of Deal on 12 July. The voyage lasted almost three years.
  • The second edition is generally preferred to the first as being more complete; it includes the chart of the Strait of Magellan and the List of Plates (missing in many copies of the first edition). Furthermore, the second edition contains additional preliminary material in the form of a new preface in which Hawkesworth replies to the charges of poor editing made against him by James Cook(7 November 1728– 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the Eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
  • John Hawkesworth (c. 1715 – November 16, 1773), English writer and book editor, was born in London. Aneminent London author, was chosen by Lord Sandwich and commissioned by the Admiralty to prepare these narratives for publication. Hewas expected to add polish to the rough narratives of sea men, and to present the accounts in a style befitting the status of the voyages as official government expeditions, intended to embellish England\'s prestige as a maritime power. Although the book was a huge success, fast becoming a best-seller, it was disastrous for its are Good/Very Good. Wear to edges, marks to boards, some blemishing here and there, some age toned pages, some blemishing in beginning of two, few small slices to some foldouts at gutter, most plates/text pages are very good, hinges/text blocks are very good for over 240 years old!!!
