THIS 1773 SILVER PAPAL MEDAL WAS STRUCK IN COMMEMORATIONOF THE SUPRESSION ANDCOMPLETE DISSOLUTIONOF THE ORDER OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS (THE JESUITS) BY PAPAL DECREE OF CLEMENT XIV IN THE PAPAL BRIEF DOMINUSAC REDEMPTORNOSTER.THIS FOLLOWED A BAN OF THE ORDER BY THE KINGDOM OF SPAIN IN 1767, AND WAS MORE POLITICALLY, RATHER THAN RELIGIOUSLY, MOTIVATED. MORE SUPPRESSIONS FOLLOWED MOTIVATED BY MONARCHS AND POWERS THAT CONSIDERED THE JESUITS A THREAT TO THEIR AUTHORITY, BUT THE ORDER SURVIVED AND WAS RESTORED AFTER THE NAPOLEONIC WARS BY POPE PIUS VII.
