The Mahmal was carried on a camel and was the center piece of the annual Muslim pilgrimage caravan from Cairo to Mecca.It was embroidered with gold threads and was designed to decorate the Ka’aba in Mecca. Before leaving Cairo for the Hajj, the Mahmal was paraded in the streets and watched by thousands. After the collapse of the Mamluk Empire in 1517, the tradition of the Mahmal was continued by Ottoman sultans.
