This document dated 1788-1790, Hartford, Connecticut is an accounting of various shoes, slippers and boots from Jonathan Janes to Thomas Seymour. Unsigned, document is 8x12, toned, overall good condition.

Jonathan Janes (1756-1824)emigrated fromHartford,Ct., soon after, if not before, the organization of the county of Franklin, Vermont. He first settled in Bickford as an agent for Thomas Seymour inHartfordwho owned a large quantity of land in that town. He removed\' to St. Albans some years after, and was apoointed a judge of the county court; was subsequently judge of probate and clerk of the county and supreme court. He died in the summer of 1824, at an advanced age. JudgeJaneswas a man of strong mind, considerably above the average of men in his situation. During the heat of party controversy between the Federalists and Republicans, he was a warm and zealous partizan, and took a decided stand in favor of the measures adopted by the general government, preceding and during the war of 1812 with Great Britain. By reason of his party politics he had political enemies, as almost every man had in those stormy times, who was conspicuous in the ranks of either of the great political parties. But he had, however, a very respectable standing in society, and was held in honorable estimation by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Jonathan Janes, the successor toJudgeMarvin, took his seat on the local bench in 1803, and continued until 1808. He was a native of Connecticut, from which state he came to Vermont at an early day, prior, it is said, to the organization of Franklin county. His first place of residence in the county was at Richford, which town he represented from 1799 to 1802. In 1800, 1801 and 1802 Mr.Janeswas assistantjudgeand moved to the county seat, and became chiefjudgein 1803. He was county clerk from 1809 to 1813,and again in 1816; wasjudgeof probate from 1808 to 1812.Judge Janesdied in 1824.
