By Richard Cumberland
1795 - London - C. Dilly

DETAILS
A disbound copy of one of Cumberland’s many works, remembered for John Philip Kemble’s portrayal of the misanthropist Penruddock.
Cumberland was a prolific comic dramatist, who is often remembered for his positive portrayal of colonials, Scots, and Irish. He was patriotic, but sought to allay English prejudice.
His style is of his time, and sentimental. His plays rely on relatively flat characters propelled into skillfully constructed plots.
