This is a wonderful original document dated 1795, Norwich, Connecticut where John Lagard of Windham has gone to Montreal, leaving behind money owed....in this case he owes 31 pounds to Zephenia Huntington and Eliphalet Huntington...ordered to appear by Samuel Huntington, Governor.

Document is 6x8, folds, minor toning, else in overall very good condition.Samuel Huntington (July 16, 1731  – January 5, 1796) was a jurist, statesman, and Patriot in the American Revolution from Connecticut. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, he signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. He also served as President of the Continental Congress from 1779 to 1781, chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court from 1784 to 1785, and the 18th Governor of Connecticut from 1786 until his death.

. In 1788, in an execution against him and one Zephaniah Huntington, he and his wife were listed as living in New London. Earlier, in the 1770s, Eliphalet mortgaged the homestead, and in the 1780s he transferred the property to his brother Governor Samuel Huntington, then living in Norwich. Samuel made arrangements for his financially-strapped brother and his wife and children to live on a nearby farm in Scotland, while his nephew Nathaniel (a son of Eliphalet and Dinah) lived and farmed on the Huntington farm.

Joshua Huntington (1751-1821), the son of Jabez Huntington (1719-1786) who madehis fortune in shipping, was born in Norwich, Conn. Joshua joined Putnam\'sbrigade in 1775 and was later employed in securing shipping for the use ofContinental troops.
