dedicatee of TypeeBold ink signature, \"Lemuel Shaw,\" on an off-white 2-5/8\" x 7/8\" slip clipped from the conclusion of a letter. In fine condition.
Lemuel Shaw (1781 - 1861) served as Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1830 to 1860. He earned a footnote in literary history as the father-in-law of Herman Melville, who married Shaw\'s daughter, Elizabeth, in 1847. Melville\'s regard for Lemuel Shaw was such that the author dedicated his first book, Typee, to him.
