Beattie’s famousearly work of the Romantic movement, alongside other poems, in two volumes.

James Beattie is perhaps now chiefly known as a philosopher, but he was also a hugely popular poet in his day.

His Essay on Truth, which attacked David’ Hume’s scepticism, made him very famous.But the other foundation of his reputation is the poem bound here: The Minstrel.

The first book of this poem was published in 1771, and the second followed in 1774. Praised by Samuel Johnson, it is well known for its descriptive qualities.

These two volumes are each by a different publisher, and not originally issued together as a pair. However, the binder seems to have judged that they complement each other well enough to make them into a set. They do not overlap in their contents, and appear to cover the poet\'s works effectively.

This was the personal set of Rawson Boddam Crozier, and contains his bookplate to the front pastedowns.

Both volumes have frontispieces showing the author\'s portrait, and volume one has one plate.

CONDITION

In full marbled leather, with gilt detailing to the spines and borders. Externally smart, with a little shelf wearto the spines. The leather has retained a nice patina. Each volume has a personal bookplate to the front pastedown. Volume one also has a bookseller\'s stamp to the front pastedown. Internally, the frontispiece has offset very slightly in volume one. Otherwise both are generally clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD
