Note:Louis-Pierre Anquetil (1723-1808) was aFrenchhistorian.He was born in Paris.In 1741 he joined the religious community of the Génofévains,where he took holyorders and became professor of theologyand literature.Later, he became rector of the seminary at Reims,where he wrote his Histoire civile etpolitique de Reims (5 vols.,1756-1757), perhaps his best work. He was then director of thecollege of Senlis,where he composed his Esprit de laLigue, ou histoire politique des troubles de France pendant les XVIeet XVIIe siècles (1767). He alsobecame a member of the Académiedes Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. During theReignof Terror he was imprisoned at St-Lazare;there he began his Précis de l\'histoireuniverselle, afterwards published inthree volumes. On the establishment of the Institutde France he was elected a member of theAcadémiedes sciences morales et politiques, and wassoon afterwards employed in the office of the ministryof foreign affairs, profiting by hisexperience to write his Motifs desguerres et des traités de paix sous LouisXIV, LouisXV, LouisXVI. He is said to have been asked by Napoleonto write his Histoire de France(14 vols, 1805), a mediocre compilation at second or third hand, withthe assistance of deMézeray or PaulFrançois Velly (1709-1759). This work,nevertheless, went through numerous editions, and made Anquetilfamous. It was continued by Bouilletin 6 more volumes. His younger brother, AbrahamHyacinthe Anquetil-Duperron was a famousorientalist.
