The book : Rare 19th century french edition of this classic by De Foe. New revised and corrected edition of both Daniel Defoe\'s \"The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures\" and \"The Farther Adventures\", still in the first French Amsterdam translation by Saint-Hyacinthe and Justus van Effen from 1720. As the publisher explains in his preface, he much preferred this first French translation published in the Netherlands over the adaptation by Feutry from 1766, or the translation by Madame de Montmorency-Laval from 1797. In the preliminaries a life of the author is given by A.G. Labaume from the English by Chalmers, the introduction to the first French edition of 1720, and a life of one of the first translators, Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe or Hyacinthe Cordonnier. Added also is a short list of marine nomenclature.
The author : Daniel Defoe (ca. 1659-1661 – 24 April 1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain and is among the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism
