\"The History and Antiquities of the Tower of London with Memoirs of Royal and Distinguished Persons, Deduced from Records, State-Papers, and Manuscripts, and from Other Original Sources. By John Bayley, esq., F.S.A.....In Two Parts....London; Printed for T Cadell, in The Strand.\" Volume 1 is dated 1821, and volume 2 1825.

A classic and scarce History of the Tower. All the Plates are in volume 1, and all are present as listed in the contents, with at least 3 extra ones (it is noted that some of these plates were only available after the publication of volume 2. These are present, so the 2 volumes were clearly bound after 1825). They include a fine double-page plan of the Tower as surveyed in the year 1597 (see photo).

Volume 1 consists of: A frontispiece, a Title page, A page of dedication to George 1Vth, 4 pages Preface, 6 pages Contents, the Plan, then 272 pages. There is then an Appendix xxxiv.

Volume 2 consists of: 2 Title Pages, 2 pages Preface, 1 page Contents, then 671 pages of text (starting at page 273, following on from the 1st volume). There is then a long Appendix to cxxviii and an Index of 17 pages.

Each volume measures 31cms x 24.5cms approx.

Condition: A handsome pair of volumes in half-leather bindings. The marble covers quite scuffed front and back, All edges marbled. and matching marbled endpapers in good condition. Booksellers label (Southampton), and note \"Bound by J Wright, Noel St.\" on both volumes. Also previous owner\'s inscription in ink (Sprake) on both volumes. The text in both volumes is generally clean, with only a little foxing, but the plates, which are all in volume 1 are quite heavily foxed (see photos). Both volumes holding together well.

A handsome and very attractive set for all the small faults listed above.
