Up for sale is the complete 187-year old two-volume set of Aaron Bancroft’s THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON. FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Published in Boston by T. Bedlington in 1826. 223pp; 218pp. One of the earliest biographies of Washington, originally published in 1807, and still an important reference today. This small, 4” x 6-1/2” set, bound in full leather, is complete, with clean text blocks. The front and rear covers on Volume I are detached, but the breaks are clean; Volume II is complete, with a weak front hinge and a firm rear hinge. Spines decorated in gilt, and in good shape. A good candidate for a rebind. Frontispiece portrait of Washington in Volume I; scene of “The Surrender of Cornwallis” in Volume II.
