1850 AUBURN NY STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO MARENGO NY - COURTSHIP LETTER :
$4.99

1850 stampless folded letter with blue \"AUBURN/N.Y.\" cds and blue \"5\" rate handstamp, addressed to Jonathan Stevens at Marengo, Wayne County, NY.

Letter contents dated at Auburn, NY, Feb. 17, 1850, from Amelia H. Locke.

A wonderful beginning of courtship letter, following the formal custom of the time, in which Amelia gives permission for Jonathan Stevens to correspond with her.

Her spelling is rather touch and go (\"wood\" for \"would\", etc.), but Jonathan probably wasn\'t interested in her for her spelling skills.

The letter reads (spelling corrected here):

\"Mr. Stevens Sir,

With pleasure I improve this opportunity of answering a letter that I received from you the 12 of this month, dated Oct. the 28, wishing to know whether I would correspond with you or not. Being some time since you wrote, I would say that if your mind is the same in regard to corresponding with me, I should be happy to do so. I shall expect to see or hear from you soon.

Yours with respect,

Amelia H. Locke to Mr. Stevens\"

Fine.
