1850 Antique Victorian Paisley Shawl Woven Jacquard English Huge Sensuous Design For SaleQuite the most extraordinary and stunning antique paisley shawl I have had the good fortune to come upon.I would describe this as museum quality
It dates in size and design features from the mid 1850sProbably English, woven on the newly introduced jacquard looms, in the finest woolen thread in a complicated and intricate sensuous designAbstract floral motifs stud the elongated traditional pine cone shapes and the colour palette is fine and unfaded
The more I looked, the more I saw and I just couldn't quite believe how much flourish and individuality has been achieved within the frame of this 5' by 11' panelBordered on the long and short sides with individual repeated motifs, tiny tied tassels of bright wool accents on the narrow ends and a green band along the absolute edge of the lengthsNot sure whether this has a silk mix within the warp and weft, the back has white threads showing through and is finely fluffy
The body of the shawl has a central motif but what strikes me most is the intricacies of the flowers and the flower bouquetsBreathtaking and truly stunning
Only two tiny holes shown in the pictures at one side, this is a magnificent and completely original example of the weavers artOffered in fabulous condition, this would be the centre piece to anyone's collection of historic and antique textiles
To be clear this measures just over 5' x 11' (152cm x 336cm)
I hope the pictures do this shawl justice - I have literally dozens more which I just couldn't include
