FULLY HALLMARKED PUSH BUTTON \'DILLER\' SPRUNG SILVER LID

Description:

An importantand earlyantique mid 19th century early Victorian white opaline glass scent bottlewith engine turned silver push button activated spring hinged lid, fully hallmarked for London 1854. The lid is finelydecorated with engine turned detail to the collar, sides and top, around a circular cartouche engraved with the initials KJ (mirrored).

This early spring loaded cap mechanism is claimed to have been invented by Thomas Diller (1828 - 1851) and its presence is indicativeof an extremely high quality piece. The inner lid bears the name \'DILLER\' above a coronet under the glass cap.

Silver and glass pieces of this type and period are frequently unmarked. With a full set of hallmarks for 1854 this piece provides an important dating benchmark for the period.

The edge of lid bears full hallmarks as follows:

Makers Mark: none, but inventor\'s name seen within lid as describedabove

Silver grade:Lion passant mark for Sterling 925 Silver

Assay office: London

Date letter:(T) 1854

Also with Monarch\'s head stamp indicating duty paid.

Condition:

In very good antique condition. The glass shows a couple of tiny bites around the lower edge of the base, but is otherwise undamaged. The silver hinged lid is in perfect working order. Please see the images provided which complement this description.
