          THE MASONIC TEXTBOOK

Original 1855 Edition of “The Masonic Text Book” by Jeremy L. Cross. Published by New York: A.S. Barnes & Co. . Book measures 4 3/4 x 4 1/4\". 300 Pages. Bound in Full Leather Wraps with Gilt Pages.

Published in 1855, this handy little book was intended to be carried as a pocket-guide to all significant aspects of Freemasonry. These copies are becoming scarcer by the day, and few are as nice of an example as presented here. Dealing Critically and impartially with the traditions, customs, records, degrees and ceremonies of the Brotherhood, this manual contains the actual rites of the craft, extending over a period of some seven centuries and that of its grand structures.
An often highly guarded and secretive society, the fraternal brotherhood of the Freemasons remains a subject of wild fascination for historians, scholars, and general enthusiasts alike. Written by Jeremy L. Cross, a pupil of prominent Freemason Thomas Smith Webb, he published in 1819 the True Masonic Chart of Hieroglyphic Monitor on which he borrowed liberally from the previous work of Webb whose modifications of the Preston Lectures and of the advanced Degrees were generally adapted by the Freemasons of the United States.

Superseding Webb, it was Cross’ Text Book delivers in a single volume the vast history of the craft from Masonic Initiation rituals in the various degrees from Entered Apprentice to the Order of the High Priesthood, along with Symbols, Grips, handshakes, secrets, and regalia. In addition, it contains the three degrees of Knighthood including Knights of the Red Cross, The Knights Templar, and the Knights of Malta giving a brief account of the rituals of the craft including installation, encampment, and burial ceremonies. Throughout the book is profusely illustrated with hundreds of Symbolic Engravings.
