I am pleased to present for your viewing and potential offer a pre-Civil-War era (1857) letter and postal cover addressed to Charles J. McKune but can\'t read the city/state. Postmark January 20 from Susquehanna Depo PA. Letter written in January, 1857.

\"Hello there. Sunday has again come around to me and so I\'ve squandered for a general write you\'re first on the list so here goes. First about OBear\'s Christmas. Hope you hadregular jolly. I did. Bless a hundred an oyster (??) I dum the thing, I at Rev. Baylor\'s New Years Eve and New Years day. Martin and Phebe were married. The operation came off about 11 amand the services by Rev. Ward standing committee. Luther, Bernie, Chip, Dave, Ford and Chet Bebee & Ellen W. ??? around awhile took a ride and then to ??? Jacobs in the evening to another oyster (?) and a perfect jam had lots of shows got home about three o\'clock in the morning. Since the wedding Pete has been at Daddy Jacobs and job likely ??? sworn ??? out til spring. Then has been a donation at Wallersville(??) if I a had that note I would have been a splendid chance but I shall go to meeting there next Sunday ???.

I\'m sitting here by the stand both feet??? up out the legs. Papa\'s reading the Brisbane Charter, one of John\'s letters, and Maureen Brine (???) reading the Franklin Almanac Diary a ??? of cider and bowl of spiced apples distributed around. Not much to write about myself---go to school---plenty of hugging and helping ??? Blen\'s a singing operation at Seanesboro (??) definitely nights, but its too ??? cold to do anything and I think that showed good judgment in getting a bedfellow when he did. Got a letter last week from Nel Grey he is in Chirusuten (??) got 163-1/2 acres of land so woodland ?? and got it Jan for good. I have not been to ??? since last fall. Maybe I should go again in ten years. ??? died yesterday had a fit and kicked the bucket in a hurry fell because she ??? a favorite ??? him! Last week I helped arrest Giles Grey and cousin for counterfeiting---found about 30 dollars on them these has two ??? been caught --- one at Senanton (???) another at deposit. the one at De??? had about 500 dollars back I took charge of Sil when we got to Lewisboro (???) over. Here he begged for me not to tie him. He told one Mary ??? write from St. Louis that you had been there to see her father ?? so good ole hop ??! Silas is out around on bail of $800 and he\'ll forfeit it and ???. Ben Petyssunth ??? you knew had caved at Lea if you didn\'t, I did. He feared last summer, was sold out by Bennett at the default. He went to Africa started another ???, married a 16 yr old ??? whose pappy is rich as ??? and ??? himself generally died ??. I want you to make a deed out from that lot at the default and sign it and serve it here and ??? the raise and raise ??? and Daniel Bowen will sign it for the children. I\'ll do the business and get the money and send it to you or else as you wish with your share of it. Here\'s the information \"property at the southwest corner deeded by W ??? to James Kirk and now verified by Bhomas farm there South 89-1/2\' east 60 feet to the corner of a lot deeded by Robert McKune administrator of the estate of R. McKune one Goverment ?? the center of a lane for which use of which lane 120 feet is hereby preserved. Bheree ?? along the center of said lane South 1/2 degrees west sixty feet (60 feet) to the corner of lot owned by one Perrine Gherree ?? along the line of said Perrine north 88-1/2 degrees west eighty one (81) feet to the center of he River Road. Then north 260 degrees East sixty-two 6-/10 (62-6/10) feet to the place of beginning back out the deed so that J A & CL (??) can sign it. I\'ll pay my share on half the whole of what it costs to get a deed. Please no hurry up your cakes and write down -- the description is where from the deed.
