1859-60 PRO SLAVERY PRE CIVIL WAR BOOK BOUND RURAL REGISTER FARM MAGAZINE VOL. 1:
$49.95

This is a bound copy ofthe first 24 issues (Vol. 1 No. 1toVol. 1 No. 24)ofThe Rural Register dating from July, 1859 to June 1860. The magazine was a 16 page (plus cover and ads)periodicalpublishedtwice monthly.Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 (also listed on ) measure 12 x 9 inches. Vol. 3 &Vol. 4 (which Iwill belisting soon)are in a smaller 9 x 6inch format. This publication catered to the rural farmer which at the time meant that it had a large circulation in the rural south. The editors claimed to be neutral on the subject of slavery but owing to the fact that their revenue was dependent on that region and the journal was published in BaltimoreMD (a border state with strong southernsentiment)the editorial bent is decidedly Pro Slavery.A November issue has an article on the attempted Abolition Revolution by John Brown which was put down by Col. Lee (Robert E.). A supplement at the back describes the trial and a December issue has a description of the execution. A December issue also has an article (full page plus a half column)describing a pro slavery speech delivered in Richmond VA. A small notice is also printed (Februaryissue)that notes a judges ruling that The Fugitive Slave Aid Society is an illegal organization. There are several notations in various issues about the National Party Conventions, one of which nominates Abe Lincoln. Some delegates leave the Democratic Convention to form a SecedersParty. The editors are upset with SenatorSumner whogives anotherAbolitionist speech and note that he was beaten a year or two ago for the same offense. The supplement at the back contains 162 pages which are mostly ads with great illustrations. After the supplement there are 120 blue colored pages with the covers of the 24 issues plus all the ad pages which were in the original issues.Inmany instances there are multipleidentical ad pages so I assume they just tookthe 24 issues and placed every page in the book even if the ad pageswere identical. There are lots of great illustrations both in the main body which illuminate the articles plus literally hundreds of adillustrations. Some full page ads, some not, but many, many illustrations. I could actually have taken out the ad pages and sold many separately but could not bring myself to piecemeal the book because of the historical significance. The book is in great shape with justsome darkening of the blank end pages, no foxing or unpleasant odor.
