Exceptionally rare and original, 1860 Abraham Lincoln / Hannibal Hamlin, Republican Party Presidential Election Ballot from the State of Virginia – likely THE rarest of Abraham Lincoln 1860 Ballots being one of only approx. 1900 Ballots cast for Lincoln and Hamlin out of the 168,000 cast in Virginia during the 1860 election.

This fascinating, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Ballot measures approx. 3 1/8\" by 3 3/4\" and is printed in black ink on a somewhat heavier weight paper stock. The Ballot features text at the top that reads \"Virginia Republican Ticket”. Below this text there is further text that reads \"For President, Abraham Lincoln, Of Illinois. / For Vice-President, Andrew Johnson, of Tennessee.\". The remainder of the Ballot is a list of the Republican Party Electors from each District in the State of Virginia.

The Ballot offered here features a period pencil signature on the reverse that reads “B. L. Parsons” - one of the few Virginians who cast their vote for Abraham Lincoln.

In Virginia in 1860, voting was viva voce, or by voice vote. Voters announced out loud for whom they voted in the presence of everyone there. In presidential elections only, voters also handed in ballots containing the names of candidates for presidential elector, and they signed the back of the ballots in order that a ballot could be removed if a voter\'s eligibility was successfully challenged.

Virginia was the only one the eleven states that would later declare their secession from the Union and be controlled by Confederate armies in which ballots for Lincoln were distributed, and the vast majority of the votes Lincoln received were cast in border counties of what would soon become West Virginia - the future state accounted for 1,832 of Lincoln\'s 1,929 votes. Lincoln received no votes at all in 121 of the state\'s then-145 counties (including 31 of the 50 that would form West Virginia), received a single vote in three counties and received ten or fewer votes in nine of the 24 counties where he polled votes. Lincoln\'s best results, by far, were in the four counties that comprised the state\'s northern panhandle, a region which had long felt alienated from Richmond and which was economically and culturally linked to its neighbors Ohio and Pennsylvania and which would become the key driver in the successful effort to form a separate state.

This exceptionally rare and original, 1860 Lincoln / Hamlin Presidential Campaign Ballot is in very good condition – with uniform, light age toning but no physical damage or repairs of any kind.
