As evidenced by the lengthy subtitle, the book provides practical instruction for a wide array of handicrafts popular in the mid-19th century, including preparation, materials, and techniques. (Among the colorful techniques described are potichomanie, i.e., decorating the interior of a clear glass vessel with scraps, cigar bands, etc., to imitate painted porcelain.)
