Very rare, original, 1865 Albumen CDV Photograph of an artistic representation of the moment that President Abraham Lincoln died as a result of the actions of assassin John Wilkes Booth. The CDV Photo is not identified in any way and does not carry a photographer’s or publisher’s mark.
This rare and quite disconcerting, Photograph measures approx. 3 1/2” by 2 1/8” and is mounted on its original square corner photographer‘s mount (overall size of mount is 4” by 2 1/2”). The image is a “fantasy” view of the scene at the death bed of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln’s son Robert Todd stands at the foot of the bed crying into his hands and one of the attending doctor sits in a chair next to the bed of the dying President. The room is populated by 15 men - most identifiable political and military figures. At the time of Lincoln’s death those in the room included Senator Charles Sumner, Union Army Generals Henry Wager Halleck, Richard James Oglesby and Montgomery C. Meigs, as well as Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. All are pictured here but others - including Vice President Andrew Johnson shown prominently at the center right - were certainly not present.
This somber and fascinating, 1865 depiction of the Death of Abraham Lincoln in CDV format is in very good condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. Both the Photo and the card mount are generally clean and crisp and well preserved with some light soiling and light edge wear to the card mount.
