1860s Civil War Soldier Tintype Photograph - Identified 1st Mass Cavalry Soldier:
$162

Very rare and original, 1860's Cased Ninth Plate Tintype Civil War Photograph of a young, identified, Union Army Cavalry Soldier (from the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry) in uniform.

This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 2" by 2 1/2” and is housed in what appears to be its original, pressed leather hard case.

The Tintype is a wonderful, bust portrait of a Union Army Soldier wearing what appears to be a shell jacket. The Image came to us with an early 20th century manuscript note that reads “Uncle William Wyeth / brother to my grandfather. Went through the Civil War. Carried mother’s picture over heart. In uniform”. There are only two William Wyeths who served in the Civil War – One was 29 years when he enlisted on 3/16/1865 and served only 2 months. The other enlisted at the age of 19 years on 8/20/1862 and served at least until the end of 1864. This is surely the Soldier pictured here.

William Wyeth (an 18 year-old Farmer from Lunenberg, Massachusetts) enlisted on 8/20/1862 as a Private. On 8/21/1862 he mustered into "A" Co. MA 1st Cavalry (date and method of discharge not given). On 6/17/1863 he was listed as a POW at Aldie, Virginia and was exchanged / released on 8/15/1863 (place not stated). He was also listed as confined as a POW on 10/2/1864 at Florence, South Carolina.

This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of a Union Army Cavalry Soldier is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Image is well preserved with no significant scratches, scuffs or surface damage. Overall the Photograph is very well preserved and displays nicely. The pressed leather case is also very well preserved – repaired at the spine but otherwise intact and sound with light edge wear only.

A rare and wonderful, 1860's Civil War Ninth Plate Tintype Photograph of a young, identified Union Army Cavalry Soldier in uniform and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
