1861 CIVIL WAR BROADSIDE/SONG SHEET, “THE BATTLE AT BULL RUN” by A.W. HARMON. “The Battle at Bull Run, and Manassas Junction” was composed by A. W. Harmon, who was a prolific poet and printer from the 1840s to the 1870s in Portland, Maine. It consists of two columns of 4-line rhyming stanzas with an elaborate woodcut border. It is colorfully written and filled with the names of Union commanders and various state regiments that participated in the battle, including “one thousand Maine lumbermen.” Harmon attempts to paint the participants in a heroic light, while not glossing over the rout of the Federal army. “The loss is heavy and severe/ ’Tis felt by all both far and near/ May war and fightings soon be o’er/ And the sound of cannon heard no more.” It measures 7-3/4 inches X 11-3/4 inches and is in very good condition.
