South Carolina coastThis is a map published in the Dec., 1861, issue of the American Agriculturist farm journal, It is 150 years old, printed barely half a year after the start of the Civil War. The map is a single sheet, measuring 9 x 12 inches in size. It is in Fine condition.The map itself is a small one, occupying only a portion of the page, in its upper right corner. The map image is 4.5x4.5 inches in size. Drawn on a scale of about 15 miles to the inch, it depicts the Carolina coast. Charleston and Walterboro are close to the top of the map and Dafuskie Island and Tybee Sound (“Entrance to Savannah, Geo.”) is at the bottom. Among the points of interest featured on the map are “Hilton H.”; “Edisto I.”; “St. Helena I.” and Hunting Island, Beaufort. The Savannah & Charleston Railroad line is shown from Charleston to Coosawhatchie, at the edge of the map. The locations of Fort Beauregard and Fort Walker are noted with asterisks, and rough shading indicates swampland.The map is not titled, but below it there is the explanatory text:“Above we present a map of a locality which is of special interest just now. We had intended to give a larger and much better engraved map, but the Index has so crowded everything in this number, that as a last resort, we use the above limited map. It will, however, indicate pretty well the scene of the present operations of our National Fleet.”
