You are offerding on a guaranteed authentic original Civil War Union Soldier Letter dated August 25, 1861. In this letter Abraham Lincoln visits him and the other troops in the fields and they give him three cheers.

The letter is 4 pages on patriotic stationary by Pvt. George Bender (WIA Second Bull Run, Virginia 8/29/62), Battery B (Cooper\'s Battery), 1st Penn. Light Artillery, Washington City.


Also the original envelope with a picture of Maj. General George B. McClellan and addressed to his brother, Jackson Bender with a three cent Washington stamp.


Below is the letter\'s content:

“Washington City – August 25th, 1861

Mi (My) dear brother I take mi (my) pen in hand to let youknow that I am well at present and hope these few lines will find you all injoying (enjoying) the same state of health.Know (Now) I must tell you where we are and what we are doing. We are about five miles north west ofWashington City. We are incamped(encamped) write (right) in the woods. Itis a very pleasant place but it has been wet wet here but this is Sunday and itis a very nice day. We are drilling hereevery day twice. We halve (have) onlyfour guns and about fifty or sixty horses.I halve (have) got two little bay horses. One I call Bill and the other Dick. I was out on the road the other day and whatdo you think I seen there. (?) I seen old Peat.I knew it was him as soon him for I just look like I use to. He was in a four horse wagon hawling(hauling) hay to the army. He is usedvery well. The one half of our companyis going to the Big Falls on the Potomac River to morrow (tomorrow) morning ongard (guard). It is about fourteen milesfrom here. We are expecting to fight anyday but we don’t know when it will be but they will halve (have) some troubleto wride (ride) over us all for there is a good many of us when we are alltogether. WE WAS OUT ON DRILL THE OTHERDAY AND THERE WAS ABOUT TEN OR FIFTEEN THOUSAND SOLDIERS IN THE FIELD AND OLDABE LINKEN (LINCOLN) WAS THERE AND WE ALL HAD A GOOD CHANCE TO SEE HIM ANDAFTER HE WAS AROUND WE ALL GAVE HIM THREE CHEERS AND IT MAD (MADE) A GOOD DEALOF NOIS (NOISE). I a sure (assure) youthere is about one hundred and ninty (ninety) thousand soldiers handy aroundhere so they say. I haven’t seen themall yet but I halve (have) seen an awful site of them. We halve (have) some big times here but wi(we) are kept mi ty (mighty) cloce (close) here. We haft (have) to go ongard (on guard) a bout(about) every third night and drill every day and it goes pretty durn hard andnot very good grub at that. No potatoes,no butter, no molasses but what we by (buy) our selves. We get fresh beef twice a week and saltedpork the balance of the times. There area corn field land here and I know that the corn ain’t all in it. Know (Now) that was when we come here I always did like rosten ears pretty darn well. Know (Now) when you write to me tell me howthe colt is getting along and wether you got mi (my) fiddle or not. If you haven’t got it yet why I want you toget it and take good care of it and the colt till I come back and wrid (ride)it when it gets big a nuff (enough) and don’t spoil it> I haven’t got nothing more to say but give mi(my) re spect (respect) to all of the folks.Tell aunt Marget I am well and I would write to you all but I haven’ttime to write hardly every day.
