Original November 14, 1861Civil War note written and signedby Major General Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894), who was named by Lincoln to be one of thefirst Major Generals of the Union Army on May 16, 1861. This note is sent by Banks, who was stationed at SenecaCreek, Maryland, to Samuel W. Pennypacker, thenan 18-year-old student (soon to be soldier) who would become Governor of Pennsylvania in 1903.Accompanied by an original 19th century steel engraved portrait of Banks.
