This is Volume 4 of \"Executive Documents printed by order of the House of Representatives during the Third Session of the Thirty-Seventh Congress, 1862-63\", containing the remainder of Executive Document Number 1, \"Message of the President of the United States to the Two Houses of Congress at the Commencement of the Third Session of the Thirty-Seventh Congress\" as well as Executive Documents Nos. 2 to 21.
This contains the 117 page report of Secretary War Edwin M. Stanton on the progress of the Civil War. This includes official reports of the strategic situation, battles, logistics, and the arms industry. There is an excellent large fold-out schematic of a gunboat by John Lenthall, which I think is an early plan for what would become the City-class ironclads, intended for use on the Mississippi.
After this there are long reports from the Postmaster General, the Treasury, etc.; there are single page messages of commendation from Abraham Lincoln (including one to the commander of the Monitor after its engagement with the Merrimack); other documents include short accounts of the situation at West Point Military Academy and treaty payments to Indian tribes in Michigan.
In good condition (rather worn externally, quite clean internally). Externally the spine shows cracking and chipping with significant loss and flaking; there is an aimless bit of tape at the top. The boards are somewhat bowed. The hinges are very cracked, some detachment in places, glued, barely serviceable but the boards could come off at any time. The corners are bumped and worn. There are other scuffs and minor blemishes. Internally, the pages are generally clean, with an occasional minor blemish, a few corner creases and minor tears, discoloration to endpapers/pastedowns.
