The text of the letter, as follows, has been transcribed using the misspellings and lack of punctuationby the writer. Some words are unreadable and/or misspelled:

The mail has just come Amy got a letter from Richard they are well, R- said in the letter that he had just been out on a forage-ing expedition & had succeeded in pressing into the service 1400 lb of hay. you know he gets such things for _______, He also says they have a young lady boarding with them who is going to school she is company for E- while he gone. Sammy Jim Palmer & I were on guard day before yesterday at Post #4 the posts are from 1 to 3 miles from town, three go out to a post together to stay a day and night at most of the Posts there is a shelter to keep the rain off but I was going to tell you how we faired out at Post #4 We took a cold boiled chicken, with us together with light bread & honey, when we get there a cow came along sam went out and milked her then we swaped the sugar & coffee we had with us to a woman who lived close by for three good coldwolter coin daggers so you see we faired well. Jim went into the house & borrowgled several books among them was \"Thaddeus of Warsaw\" a 12mo book of 500 pages and very interesting I commenced it in the morning and staid out there until noon the next day to finish it. I have an excellent chemistry which I got at Trenton among some old books which a search had left in an old loft that where I got this paper too I have enough of it to last me some time. We had a snow Friday week about 6 inches deep it lay on the ground several days but the weather is warm and cloudy now. The day after it snowed, I went turkey hunting with two of the boys but dident get any we were at a man\'s house about 3 milesw from here who said that he once live within 25 miles of Clarkville and was aquainted with Major Hughes, Capt Brient, and an adjutant Hughes but he thought the name was ________, said he had been in Turnersville often, had heard of Grandpa Isaac Hughes the blacksmith, he live there from 1818 to 24 when he moved here. he is so ignorant I don\'t know whether to own him as an American Citizen or not, he would talk about Illinois County etc, I guess it is time I should close this scroll. We are glad that we are not forgotten by laidies of B- in their prayer meetings may God bless them & answer their prayers.
