[London?: 1862].Scarce near miniature Civil War Era pocket style Civil War era King James New Testament in the classic \'haversack\' style, as shown, with gilt page edges. Original leather with wallet style slip and catch, some rubbing and exposure to the extremities of the spine and edges of the leather overall, a few stresses, as well as some stains. Spine with gilt title. Lacking title and final leaf of Revelations, but binding is English as the tab open to the rear cover in typical English fashion. Not to say this isnt important- the book has a post War presentation to Jacob Rufus McNeill from his father Oliver Goldsmith McNeill, both of Bracken Co., Kentucky. There is also a nice printed Reward Merit within in hand color, as shown. Two notable pieces of information- first, the English origins mirror many of the pocket Bibles carried by the Confederacy; rather than use any United States printed Bibles, the Rebels opted in many cases to use imported English Bibles instead. The second is that records show Oliver served with the 23rd OH infantry, and Bracken Co., KY is directly over the Ohio River from Ohio. In fact, Oliver grew up in Ohio as well. Not sure what this says about the McNeill family; living in an area that was both Confederate and Union was difficult and this Bible, we believe, reflects both sides of the spectrum. See more below. Oliver Goldsmith McNeill moved from the farm at Chilo, Ohio, to Bracken County, Kentucky, sometime after his father\'s death in 1851. Bracken County is right across the Ohio River from Chilo. Click here to see maps of the area.

Oliver graduated from William and Mary, the second oldest university in the United States, and afterwards taught school in Bracken County. Unfortunately, many university records before the Civil War were destroyed by fire.

Oliver and Martha were married February 19, 1859, in Bracken County, at the home of Martha\'s father, John Byar. The minister was Elkhanah Johnson, and the witnesses were Jas W. Staton, John W. Summers and Wilfred Monohon.
