Thisis a beautifully engraved certificate from the Confederate States of Americafor a war bond authorized by an Act of Congress dated April 30, 1863 inRichmond, VA which was the site of the Confederate capital. This historic document was printed by one oftwelve different engravers the Confederate used to design and print bonds,Evans & Cogswell, of Columbia, South Carolina. The bond has an ornate border all around andcontains a vignette of James A. Seddon, CSA Secretary of War. Nineteen coupons are attached.

Thisdocument was signed by Robert Tyler, the Registry of the Treasury, who was theson of US President John Tyler. RobertTyler was born in New Kent County, Virginia in 1818 and was educated at Williamand Mary. Afterwards, he adopted the professionof law. Mr. Taylor moved to Philadelphiain 1843, where he practiced law and held several civil offices. In 1844 he was elected president of the Irishrepeal association. Shortly after hebecame prothonotary of theSupreme Court of Pennsylvania. In 1858he was chairman of the Democratic executive committee of the state. He was a personal friend of President JamesBuchanan before he had to flee to the Confederacy. Though his father’s influence, he procuredthe post of Registry of the Treasury, which he held from August 13, 1861 to theend of the war. After the war, he movedhis family to Alabama, where he became a newspaper editor. He also became head of the Democratic Partyin Alabama. He died in 1877.

Noticethe brown color of the ink, which is quite common for antique documents. It is caused by iron in the ink whichoxidizes over time.

Thisdocument comes framed and matted along with museum quality glass.

This document does not appear to be adhered to the white foam board in the frame. The frame can be disassembled.
