An Original Antique HAND WATER COLORED Map of IOWA and the NEBRASKA TERRITORY from Johnson and Ward\'s New Family Atlas, published 1863.
This CIVIL WAR map shows the counties individually hand water colored along with early railroads. Unusual for this time period, this exceptionally detailed map shows hundreds of stage coach and wagon roads from the time period. In fact, other than military maps these were the most accurate maps available at the time.
Published in 1863, this was the last year that Johnson\'s maps were published with the \"IVY BORDER\". The following year they would sport the \"DOMINO BORDER\".
Only the Eastern 1/3 of the NEBRASKA TERRITORY had been settled at the time but 3 proposed railroad routes indicate possible routes for the future Transcontinental Railroad which would not be completed until 1869.
