The 188th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (or 188th OVI) was aninfantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 188th Ohio Infantry was organized at CampChase in Columbus, Ohio and mustered in for one year service on March 4, 1865under the command of Colonel Jacob E. Taylor.

This chit is dated May 5, 1865, and made out to a MichaelEucher a private in Company B. This unitwas only in existence for less than 7 months making it one of the shortest ofthe war.

A Sutler is a civilian merchant who sells provisions to anarmy in the field, in camp or in quarters. The sutler sold wares from a wagonor tent, allowing them to travel along with an army. Certain sutlers were associatedwith particular regiments and had the monopoly on providing goods to thesoldiers. A sutler\'s check was used by a soldier to buy items from the sutler\'sgoods prior to payday; on payday the signed check was then presented to thepaymaster, who paid the sutler from the pay due the soldier.

Condition is essentially mint with minor edge wear on the left.No folds, no holes - amazing condition from 150 years ago. Original period ink. Back is blank.

Itwas attached to 1st Brigade, Defenses Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad,Department of the Cumberland, to April 1865. 1st Brigade, 1st Sub-District,District of Middle Tennessee, to September 1865. Performed provost duty atMurfreesboro, Tennessee, until May 1865. At Tullahoma, Tennessee, until July,and at Nashville, Tennessee, until September 1865.
