MYSTERIES

OF

ByMoses Quinby

1865

Subtitlecontinues: CONTAINING THE RESULT OF THIRTY-FIVE YEARS\' EXPERIENCE, AND DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MOVABLE COMB AND BOX-HIVE, TOGETHER WITH THE MOST APPROVED METHODS OF PROPAGATING THE ITALIAN BEE.

MosesQuinby (1810 – 1875) of St. Johnsville, New York, wasone of the first commercial beekeepers in the United States. He began his business in 1828 and grew it toabout 1,200 hives in Mohawk Valley, New York.Among his contributions in beekeeping is the invention of the modern beesmoker with bellows.

“It is time the word ‘luck,’ as applied tobeekeeping was discarded. The prevailingopinion, that bees will prosper for one person more than another, under thesame circumstances is fallacious. Withbeekeeping, the careful man is the ‘lucky’ one. There can be no effect without a proceeding cause. If you lose a stockof bees, there is a cause or causes producing it, just as certain as thefailure of a crop with the unthrifty farmer, can be traced to a poor fence, orunfruitful soil. Why is there so muchmore uncertainty in apiarian science than other farming operations? It must be attributed to the fact, that amongthe thousands who are engaged in, and have studied agriculture, perhaps notmore than one has given his energies to the nature and habits of bees.”
