1865 Tin Type Native American Civil War Soldier John Welch Viroqua For Sale
Here is a rare example of a Native American being photographed in a civil war uniform. According to the atlas there were 4,000 Indians who served for the union during the civil war. I'm thinking that this number might represent the native pop. of Wisconsin that joined. We've included a map from an Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History. Viroqua according to the atlas had various iroquois tribes around it plus ottawa and winnebagos. John Welch mustered in at Ripon, Wisconsin. this is south of Fond du lac which is pot. country. From what I could find out he was in the 41st Wisconsin infantry company B. They were stationed in memphis tenn 64-65. came under one confederate attack. was mustered out in 1865 which would explain the G.A.R. star on his jacket. Any way this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as info goes on this item im sure.
