WELCOMETO SALLY’S DIARIES:

Upfor sale today is an 1866 handwritten diary. In the front there isan inscription but it was written in pencil and is a bit smudged butI believe it says, “Hattie Graves Bingham Maine.”

Thediary has steadyentries untilApril 23rd,and then there are about 151 days of writing after that which makesabout 264 days of entries out of 365 represented. One page is tornout, Oct. 22ndto Oct. 27thand one page from November 9thto November 14th.

Onanother page in the diary “Hattie Goodrich, Moscow Maine” iswritten so perhaps she married? Further research needs to be done ofcourse.

WhatI do know is thatHattie is a teacher. Her entries are rather simple and sometimes shejust writes a word or too. Lots of names however of the folks in thearea which I’ve included at the bottom of this description. Hereare a few brief example entries…..

“January1st,Did notteach school today. Had company. Marth and Gus stayed the afternoonand we went to the dance at C. Baker’s in the evening. Passes offpleasantly. This was hung on the Christmas tree.” (Ibelieve she means this diary was hung on the Christmas tree)

“February1st,Spun some yarn for my hood and mopped the floor in the forenoon.Sylvania called afternoon. We went down to Helen’s and had anoyster stew. Heard that Addie Goodrich was dead. S. and J. sat upuntil one o’clock to wait for the mail.”

“February3rd,Finished my hood. They brought Addie home today. Sylvania and I wentup to see her in the afternoon.”

“March11th,Very cold. Snow and blows all day. Reading novels and studying allday. I am as lonesome as a dog.”

“April22nd,My sore pained me so today. I could not set up. Dr. Blunt come atnight and lanced it.”

“April29th,My arm has got about well. Raining today. Sabrina Baker’s child wasburied today.”

“May31st,Viola Moore and I went down to Pickard’s a visiting this afternoon.After supper we all went over the river a boxberrying. Hired a box inthe P.O. for a year. Paid twelve cents.”

“July28th,My school closed today. Hass, May and Maria Smith came in theafternoon. The girls went out in the floor and read some pieces andthe boys spoke. They done very well.”

“August20th,Have been sick a week with my arm.”

“August30th,Walked down to Charles H.’s and stopped until after dinner then Igot a chance to go home with Jo. Bassett. Lots of the young folkswent down to Solon to a dance.”

“September6th,Sue (?) diedat half past eight this morning. Did not go to school today. We wentup to see Sueafter supper. Am going to set tonight with Mrs. Washburn.”

“October30th,Have had a headache all day. Father came up after Susan. They got atelegraph dispatch that Elva was sick and her mother has gone down onthe stage. Was raining this morning. Has cleared off tonight.”

“December3rd,Commenced my school in Cornville today. Had 26 scholars. Board at Mr.Well’s.”

Thediary is in poor shape because the cover is very worn and torn,especially on the spine. The back pocket is also torn. The pages lookgood other than the ones I mentioned above that are torn out andthere are also a few torn out pages in the back. Please keep thecondition in mind when purchasing. The diary measures about 4”x 6”.
