Very rare and original, 1870\'s Native American Apache Indian Stereoview Photograph of a band of Apache Scouts and their families likely taken near Camp Apache, Arizona. The View is titled simply \"Apacha Chief [sic]\" and identified as having been taken by Los Angeles, California photographer T. E. Stanton. There is an affixed label on the reverse of the retailer.
This wonderful Apache Indian Stereo Photo measures approx. 7\" by 4\" and is mounted on its original, flat, yellow colored card mount. It is a wonderful outdoor scene showing an Indian encampment with bark lodge in the background. The location is likely Arizona or New Mexico in the 1870\'s. Most of the men wear military jackets, M1851 eagle belt buckles and an assortment of headgear (sombrero, kepi, forage cap). These are surely some of the famed Apache Scouts employed by the United states Army and based out of Camp Apache, Arizona.
We have been unable to identify any of the Apache Braves pictured here and wound greatly appreciate any information that help us to more definitively identify the individuals, the band and the location depicted here.
This very rare and fascinating, original Stereoview Photograph is in very good condition. The Photographs exhibit sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Images are clean and crisp while the card mount has some edge wear as can be seen in the scans below. There is also a crease too the mount at the upper right hand corner which does affect the Image but is unobtrusive.
