The Masterpieces of French Art.\"Blanche Barretta [1855 - 1939], made her debut at the Theatre Comedie-Francaise, in 1875, and immediately captured the hearts of the Parisians. The talented Painter Louise Abbema, is remarkable for her successful portrait painting, and having identified her career with the theatrical fraternity, is known in Paris as the theatrical portrait painter, par excellence. A more pleasing portrait of a beautiful woman it has seldom been our good fortune to behold especially \"The liquid loveliness of eye,\" and no wonder that it was the chief favorite among portraits in the Salon of 1880. Mlle. Abbema is so young, that we will be forgiven the admission, that we do not know her age — she is however old enough to have earned a distinguished and honorable fame.\" Louise Abbema [1853-1927], was a French painter, sculptor, and designer of the Belle Epoque. She was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon, where she received an honorable mention for her panels in 1881. Abbema was also among the female artists whose works were exhibited in the Women\'s Building at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A bust Sarah Bernhardt sculpted of Abbema was also exhibited at the exposition.
The creation of the photogravure plate was a complicated process requiring a work by a photographer and experienced master-engraver. First, a copper plate was coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality intaglio print that can reproduce the detail and continuous tones of a photograph. It is a manual process. Therefore, the quality of the photogravure depends on the masterly execution by the engraver. In contrary to steel engravings, photogravures leave a plate impression in the paper. Due to relative softness of copper, the editions of photogravures were limited to a few thousand copies similarly to copper engravings and etchings. In 1870s - 90s, Goupil & Cie were the leading art dealers in 19th century France, with headquarters in Paris and a network of branches in London, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin and Vienna, as well as in New York and Australia. Instrumental for this expansion was the \"Ateliers Photographiques\", a plant north of Paris, in Asnieres, which took up its work in 1869. The photogravures created in this plant dominated the world art market of 1880s-1890s. Please see pictures for quality. Shipping & Handling will be $9.95
