Elections WILLIAM McKINLEY Big PHOTO Original POLITICAL BUTTON Description This is a nice, old, original, photo, William McKinley \"Political Button\" from either or more probably both the 1896 or 1900 United States Presidential Elections. Both pitted Republican William McKinley of Ohio against Democrat William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska.

In the 1896 election Bryan gave his famous \"Cross of Gold\" speech and barnstormed the country, traveling and giving speeches. In just 100 days, Bryan gave over 500 speeches to several million people. Meanwhile, McKinley sat on his front porch in Canton. His Republican, railroad owning backers filled \"Special Trains\" with \"Delegations\" and sent them to Canton for a parade and meeting with McKinley.

Weight: 3.60 Gram, 32 Millimeter, Metal.
\"A Guide Book to United States Medals and Tokens\" by Katherine Jaeger. (General Reference).

Obverse: William McKinley.

McKinley fought in the Civil War, entering as a Private and mustering out as a Major. He did not want, and tried hard to avoid, the \"Spanish-American War\" of 1898. After the war, and after the problems of governing the Philippine Islands had landed in his lap he lamented \"If only Dewey had sailed away!\"

In the 1900 election, McKinley\'s 1896 Vice President, Garret Hobart had died from a heart attack in 1899. During the convention, when McKinley\'s chief advisor and friend Mark Hanna heard that Theodore Roosevelt was being considered for Vice President he said \"You would put that madman a heartbeat from the Presidency!\" Ironically McKinley was assassinated and died in 1901.

Reverse: Underprinted Union \"bug\" • Made by • Whitehead & Hoag Co. • Newark, N. J., U. S. A. • Patented • July 17, 1894 • April 14, 1896 • July 21, 1896.

The Whitehead & Hoag Company of New Jersey was organized in 1892. There were several hundred persons employed by the company in the manufacture and sale of buttons, badges, banners, Flags and an almost infinite variety of advertising novelties in celluloid, metal, ribbons, silk and woven fabrics (all collected today). Mr. Benjamin S. Whitehead was the president and Mr. Chester R. Hoag, the vice president. The company insisted on making a top quality product and refused to advertise any other way than on their own product. It was eventually sold to Bastian Brothers and the factory was closed in 1959.

The Button: A decent fully original example of a historical button, it has passed through some hands and has some light defects. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
